Do you have specialized eye protection for solar viewing on April 8th?

Nextdoor Illinois - 41 updates — Nextdoor (2)

As you may have heard, a solar eclipse will occur across parts of the United States on April 8th. For those lucky enough to be in the path of totality on that day, it will be a total solar eclipse. Those not in the path of totality everywhere else in the U.S. will see a partial eclipse. No matter where you are on that day, there are important precautions to remember.

According to NASA, it is only safe to look directly at the Sun with specialized eye protection for solar viewing that meets the ISO 12312-2 Standard for Solar Viewers. Do NOT use regular sunglasses. If you’re in the path of totality, you can remove solar glasses ONLY during the brief phase of a total solar eclipse when the Moon completely blocks the Sun's bright face.

You can find a list of suppliers of safe solar viewers & filters by the American Astronomical Society here - https://eclipse.aas.org/eye-safety/viewe...

Viewing any part of the bright Sun through a camera lens, binoculars, or a telescope without a special-purpose solar filter secured over the front of the optics will instantly cause severe eye injury.

𝐁𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐬𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐭𝐲 𝐠𝐮𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐡 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐨𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐝𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐭𝐨𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐞𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐬𝐞:

😎 View the Sun through eclipse glasses or a handheld solar viewer during the partial eclipse phases before and after totality. Eclipse glasses are NOT regular sunglasses. No matter how dark, regular sunglasses are unsafe for viewing the Sun.

➡️ You can view the eclipse directly without proper eye protection only when the Moon completely obscures the Sun's bright face – during the brief and spectacular period known as totality. (You'll know it's safe when you can no longer see any part of the Sun through eclipse glasses or a solar viewer.)

✅ As soon as you see even a little bit of the bright Sun reappear after totality, immediately put your eclipse glasses back on or use a handheld solar viewer to look at the Sun.

🚫 Do NOT use eclipse glasses or handheld viewers with cameras, binoculars, or telescopes. Those require different types of solar filters.

According to the American Optometric Association, if you experience discomfort or vision problems following the eclipse, visit your local doctor of optometry for an in-person comprehensive eye exam. Note that it can take a few hours to a few days after viewing the solar eclipse to realize damage has occurred.

Some common symptoms include:

→ Loss of central vision,
→ Distorted vision, and
→ Altered color vision.

All symptoms should be treated as urgent until viewed by a doctor of optometry. If you suspect an eye or vision problem, don't hesitate to visit one—this is the best way to combat potentially severe complications, including vision loss.

Do you need help shoveling, or are you willing to lend a hand?

Joseph from Nextdoor's Community Team (Staff) from Nextdoor Illinois · 8 Jan

https://nextdoor.com/helpmap

Last year, I responded to a neighbor who asked for help shoveling her driveway and accessible ramp since she could neither physically do it herself nor afford to pay someone to do it for her. I was happy to help!

The experience reminded me that neighbors who can't physically shovel or live on fixed incomes often have no option but to wait for the snow to melt. Without help, they can’t get to work, the grocery store, the pharmacy, or doctor appointments.

Since we are all connected here on Nextdoor, the good news is that we can help each other!

#CookingSafety Starts with YOU. Pay attention to fire prevention(™).

While this week is #FirePreventionWeek, cooking safety starts with you each and every day of the year. Below are the top four things you can do to prevent cooking fires and related burns:

🫕 Turn pot handles toward the back of the stove. Turning your handle inward prevents kids and pets from knocking the pan off the stove, which can lead to serious burns and fires. Also, keep cooking areas clear of pot holders and other things that can catch fire.

🧑🏽‍🍳 Please always keep a lid nearby when you cook. It’s essential to have a lid nearby so that if you have a small fire on the stovetop, you can quickly slide the lid onto the pan and turn off the burner to extinguish the fire.

🔥 Watch what you heat and set a timer to remind you that you are cooking.

⏲️ In a multi-tasking world, set a timer to remind yourself to focus on your cooking. When cooking on the stovetop, turn off the burner if you need to step away from the kitchen.

🧒 Keep kids and pets three feet away from the stove/oven and where hot foods/liquids are served.

Are you curious about why 3 feet matters?

Kids under 5 make up over half of the 12,000 average annual ER visits for tableware/cup-related scald burns from hot foods/liquid being served or spilled. These kids also make up a large proportion of the over 20,000 average annual burn injuries from direct contact with a hot grill or stove/oven requiring medical attention. (NFPA Non-fire Cooking Burn Injuries Report, 2020)

Wildfire smoke from Canada is impacting much of the state today (Tuesday, June 27th), causing unhealthy air quality, which can cause:

Joseph from Nextdoor's Community Team (Staff) from Nextdoor Illinois · 27 Jun

Nextdoor Illinois - 41 updates — Nextdoor (11)

🤕 Headaches

👁️ Eye & sinus irritation

😴 Fatigue

😮‍💨 Difficulty breathing

❤️ Chest pains

💨 Asthma attacks

😖 Irritated throat

😷 Increased coughing

Wildfire smoke contains several different compounds. At high concentrations, these compounds can be harmful to our health.

Fine particulate matter is a significant component of smoke – it can travel long distances and can move deeply into the lungs when we breathe. Sensitive groups, including young children, those over 65, and individuals with reduced respiratory and heart function, are especially susceptible to particulate matter in the air from smoke.
✅ Please check in on neighbors in these sensitive groups.

➡️ To stay safe, limit time outdoors and avoid strenuous activity; wearing a high-quality mask like an N95 outdoors will help.

In addition:

1) Keep the windows and doors closed to prevent the smoke from entering your home. Use air conditioning or fans to circulate the air inside, but make sure the air intake is set to recirculate mode to avoid drawing in outdoor air.

2) Consider using a portable air purifier with a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter, as it can help remove fine particles from the air. Suppose you have a forced-air heating, cooling, or air exchange system. In that case, upgrading to a filter rated MERV 13 or higher can be especially important during smoky periods to effectively remove fine particle pollution from smoke in the indoor air.

3) Stay informed: Refer to https://fire.airnow.gov/# to see the air quality in your area and follow any advice or guidelines from local authorities or public health agencies. They may recommend when it's safe to be outdoors or if there are any specific precautions you should take. Explore a new experimental tool that provides a wildfire smoke forecast - https://firesmoke.ca/forecasts/current/

4) Avoid activities that can introduce additional smoke or pollutants into your home, such as smoking, burning candles, using gas stoves without proper ventilation, and vacuuming, as doing so can stir up particles.

5) Wildfire smoke can cause dryness and irritation in the throat and respiratory system. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and soothe your throat.

See medical attention if you experience severe symptoms such as difficulty breathing, chest pain, or dizziness.

Your local department may have specific requirements, such as a high school degree, a physical, and a background check. But when it comes down to it, volunteering with a fire or EMS department is about having the heart and drive to make a difference where it's needed most.

Volunteers are needed as firefighters, EMS providers, and support or administrative members, so you can find an opportunity that fits your interests.

To find an opportunity in your community, go to https://makemeafirefighter.org/?utm_sour... and use the "Find an Opportunity" option at the top of this page to contact your local department. You can also visit the “What It’s Like” page →to learn more about being a volunteer firefighter.

You'll receive all the training you need when you sign up to be a fire service volunteer. Depending on your department's needs and the role you choose as a volunteer, you'll learn skills to help your community during emergencies.

For operational volunteers, this may mean responding to fires, medical emergencies, vehicle accidents, natural disasters, and more. Support volunteers will assist in non-operational roles, such as administration, public education, fundraising, and more.

Neighbors, below are tips from the Illinois Attorney General Office to be on alert for storm related repair scams.

Joseph from Nextdoor's Community Team (Staff) from Nextdoor Illinois · 5 Apr 23

Nextdoor Illinois - 41 updates — Nextdoor (16)

👉 Be wary of contractors who go door-to-door to offer repair services or “free” inspections. Ask for recommendations from people you know and trust and, whenever possible, use established local contractors.
Visit the Better Business Bureau’s St. Louis or Chicago websites to see if a business is a member and whether any complaints have been lodged against it.

👉 Even if there is a need to act quickly, shop around. Get written estimates from multiple contractors, and don’t be rushed into a deal.
Get all of the terms of a contract in writing, and obtain a copy of the signed contract.

👉 Never make the full payment until all the work has been completed to your satisfaction.

👉 Never pay in cash.

👉 Be aware that you have the right to cancel a contract within three business days if you signed it based on the contractor’s visit to your home.

👉 In the case of disaster repair, if your insurance carrier denies coverage, you have the right to cancel the contract within five days of your insurance carrier’s denial.

👉 Be aware that public adjusters do not work for your insurance company and may charge additional fees. If you submit a claim to your insurance company, your insurance company will likely provide an adjuster to review your claim at no additional cost to you.

👉 If you contract with a public adjuster, pay particular attention to the amount of fees being charged and whether you are obligated to use a specific contractor for repairs.

👉 Ask to see required state and local permits and licenses. Insurance adjusters and roofers must be licensed by state agencies. It should raise a red flag if the roofer or adjuster does not have a required license, or if the name on the license doesn’t match the name on the business card or truck.

👉 Visit the IDFPR’s website, to search for roofing licenses. Visit the DOI’s website or call (866) 445-5364 to verify that a public adjuster is licensed and in good standing.

The Illinois Home Repair and Remodeling Act requires contractors to provide customers with written contracts for any repair or remodeling work costing more than $1,000. A contract must be signed by both the customer and the contractor. The law also requires contractors to carry at least the minimum amount of insurance for property damage, bodily injury and improper home repair.

Call local law enforcement agencies and his office’s Consumer Fraud Hotline (1-800-386-5438 in Chicago, 1-800-243-0618 in Springfield, and 1-800-243-0607 in Carbondale) to report any suspicious activity.
