Externship site expects the extern to have mastered these skills before they begin their clinical externship: Completion of foundational coursework and clinical rotations in audiology.
Strong understanding of audiological assessment techniques and intervention strategies.
Excellent communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with students, families, and school personnel.
Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as part of a collaborative team.
Familiarity with educational laws and regulations related to students with disabilities (e.g., IDEA, ADA, Section 504).
Enthusiasm for working in an educational setting and supporting diverse student populations.
Externship site expects the extern to learn/demonstrate these skills during their clinical externship: To develop advanced clinical skills in the assessment and management of hearing loss within an educational context.
To understand and apply best practices in educational audiology, including fitting and troubleshooting hearing aids and assistive listening devices.
To contribute to the development and implementation of individualized education plans (IEPs) and 504 plans for students with hearing impairments.

Description: Are you a dedicated 4th-year graduate student in Audiology eager to gain hands-on experience in an educational setting? We are seeking a motivated Educational Audiology Extern to join our team for the 2025-2026 academic year. This paid externship provides an exceptional opportunity to work within a large dynamic school district, focusing on supporting students with hearing impairments and enhancing their educational experience through effective audiological practices.

Goals:

  1. To develop advanced clinical skills in the assessment and management of hearing loss within an educational context.
  2. To understand and apply best practices in educational audiology, including fitting and troubleshooting hearing aids and assistive listening devices.
  3. To contribute to the development and implementation of individualized education plans (IEPs) and 504 plans for students with hearing impairments.
  4. To gain experience in collaborating with educators, parents, and multidisciplinary teams to promote student success.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct comprehensive audiological assessments and screenings for students.
  • BOA, VRA, and CPA
  • Assist in the fitting, adjustment, and maintenance of hearing aids and other amplification devices.
  • Support the implementation and monitoring of classroom accommodations and modifications for students with hearing loss.
  • Provide counseling and education to students, families, and school staff on hearing health and communication strategies.
  • Participate in IEP and 504 plan meetings, contributing audiological insights and recommendations.
  • Document and track student progress and audiological data, ensuring compliance with legal and ethical standards.
  • Collaborate with teachers, school psychologists, and other professionals to support students' academic and social-emotional needs.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development and training to stay current with best practices in educational audiology.
