CENTRAL ILLINOIS (WCIA) — The weather is getting hot and humid as summer officially arrives later this week. While the heat can bring great opportunities for outdoor fun, it can also bring severe health and safety risks. That’s why places across Central Illinois are opening cooling centers to help beat the heat.
Before heading outside, the National Weather Service (NWS) recommends drinking plenty of water and putting on light clothing and sunscreen. They also suggest limiting outdoor activity and going out either early or very late in the day. If you must spend extended time outside, take frequent breaks in the shade.
People may also be vulnerable to heat even while indoors, so be sure to check on those who are sick, elderly, or without air conditioning in such weather conditions.
The NWS also warned never to leave a pet or child unattended in a vehicle, especially in extreme heat. They added these extra pet safety tips:
If you or someone you know does not have the means to cool down this summer, they may visit any of the following cooling center locations throughout Central Illinois:
Champaign-Urbana
